Marbling Magic

Rene Eisenbart is a marbling master, but so much more!

Click HERE to watch a video on Intoduction to Marbling

We’ll have 3 days to marble! Rene will provide the supplies, including some paper, you bring blank watercolor paper, art prints, paintings you’re not happy with, maps or sheet music that you can marble. You will go home with reinvented paintings and sheets of marbled papers. This will be a FAST PACED workshop — so be prepared to move quickly. While there are many steps, marbling is easy once you learn how.
Warning: Marbling can be addictive!

Day 1
MARBLING BASICS — Prepare your paper. Learn what materials to use plus how to apply and manipulate the paint with tools to create a variety of patterns including the Gel-git, Nonpareil, Chevron, Fountain and Feather. Simulate water or stone. Make exciting one-of-a-kind papers for collage or experimental paintings. While the marbling process is fast and exhilarating, to master it requires learning the steps. But even on this first day you will be surprised how many papers you can make. If you know how, come with papers alum treated to begin marbling sooner.

Day 2
BEYOND BASICS — Learn to manipulate marbled patterns such as Birdwing, French Curl and Thistle. Rene will demonstrate how she integrates marbling with watercolor paintings by making a Lace pattern. It’s easy when you know how to approach it! We’ll talk about color palette choices and how to prepare your pattern for opacity or transparency. Marble sheets of blank watercolor paper with patterns that allow paper to show through. Marble over art prints to get a feel for how much to cover, or maps, sheet music, pages from a book. Marble the BACK side of paintings you don't want, or over the top side to combine the art and patterning. Double marble patterns that you want to enhance.

Day 3
Learn to make subtle patterns with little value change and riotous patterns full of verve. Marble specialty papers using metallic paints or technique such as dripping paint into the pattern. Master complex traditional patterns or experiment and make up your own. Rene will show you how to make the Italian Vein pattern and how to print it as a Spanish Wave. If you want, marble a 3-D object or silk scarf or cotton cloth to cover a special sketchbook.

Be prepared for a lively, fast paced workshop.

Alum solution for preparing your paper, acrylic marbling paints and wands, carrageenan size and shared marbling tools are all provided.

*Due to the extremely active and strenuous nature of this class we must limit the class to 13 students, so that Renee can give each student individual attention.  Cancellations will not be allowed after July 31st, 2022, due to the fact that CWS will be purchasing materials and putting your take home kits together.
